About STOTT Pilates

Manous also trained in the STOTT Pilates method on the reformer and stability chair. STOTT Pilates is a contemporary approach to the original Pilates method, that incorporates modern principles of exercise science, fascial fitness, and spinal rehabilitation, making it one of the safest and most effective Pilates methods available.

STOTT Pilates focuses on core stability, strength, flexibility and endurance without stressing the joints. It is suitable for a wide range of individuals and is often used in rehabilitation, athletic training, and general fitness.

The method is based on five basic principles, breathing to promote effective oxygenation of the blood, focus the mind, and to avoid unnecessary tension. Pelvic Placement to stabilisation the pelvis and lumbar spine in all positions and movements. Rib Cage Placement to ensures proper alignment of the rib cage during breathing and movement. Scapular Movement and Stabilisation and Head and Cervical Placement to ensure proper alignment of the head and neck.

The Pilates Method

Contrology is the original name for the exercise method developed by Joseph Pilates, which is now commonly known as Pilates. Joseph Pilates chose the term "Contrology" to emphasise the importance of controlling the muscles and mind during the exercises. The method focuses on developing core strength, flexibility, and overall body awareness through controlled and precise movements.

The Pilates principles includes:

  • Concentration: Focusing on the mind-body connection during each movement.

  • Control: Performing each movement with complete control over your body to ensure proper form.

  • Centering: Engaging and stabilising the muscles in your core to provide a strong foundation and alignment for all movements. This enhances the effectiveness of Pilates exercises and helps prevent injury and promotes proper posture in daily activities.

  • Flow: Performing exercises in a smooth, continuous manner without abrupt movements.

  • Precision: Executing each exercise with attention to detail and correct alignment.

  • Breath: Coordinating breathing with movement to enhance oxygenation and muscle engagement.

Joseph Pilates believed that his method would help people achieve better health, physical fitness, and mental well-being through regular practice. The Contrology method has evolved over time and has been adapted into various forms of Pilates. At 83 Pilates we teach a combination of the original exercises as described by Joseph Pilates and more contemporary methods such as Fitness Pilates and Stott Pilates.

About Joseph Pilates

Joseph Pilates  was born in Germany in December 1883. As a child he was asthmatic and suffered from rickets. As a youngster he was fascinated with movement, studying anatomy books and watching animals and the way they move. He applied this knowledge and added boxing, gymnastics and body building in an effort to improve his own health.  By the age of 14 he was in such good shape that he modelled for

anatomical charts.

In 1912 Joe moved to England to further his training, unfortunately however in 1914 Joe was imprisoned in light of his German Citizenship as Britain entered World War I. During his imprisonment he further developed his method of movement. He helped to keep other prisoners and injured soldiers fit and in good health. In 1919 Joe returned to Germany and started straining the Hamburg Military Police. He decided to move to America in 1923 after declining an invitation to train the New German Army as he did not agree with the German government's political ideology.

In 1926, Joe and his wife Clara arrived in New York City and opened a studio where he taught his Contrology method for over 40 years.
